I don’t hate mornings, and I don’t consider myself to be “lazy,” maybe just sleepy. However, I like to start my mornings when I want to start them; which is preferably not before 7:00am…maybe 6:00am if I go to sleep early (please tell me I’m not alone). This is obviously problematic because I need to be awake at 5:30, to leave my house at 6:45, and make it to work by 7:30. To be honest, even that’s pushing it sometimes because apparently I take forever to get ready even though I don’t do much. Here’s the good news. I’ve figured out where I waste the most time, and came up with a few ways to avoid the extra stress of rushing around every morning. So with that, I bring you the lazy and/or sleepy girl’s guide to a stress free morning.

This is not going to be your typical morning routine post. It can’t be because I really don’t have a routine down. So I would be lying if I wrote a post like that right now. A morning routine is something I’m still working on, and maybe something you guys can help me with (although if you’re reading this post you probably struggle with mornings just as much as i do). This is simply some “stress free morning hacks” if you will. Things that I’ve learned to do to avoid running around like a crazy person everyday. So learn from my madness y’all 🙂
Tips for a Stress Free Morning
1. Pick our your clothes the night before (saves 10-20 minutes)
This is honestly my number one tip because this is where I waste the most time! I’ll stand there stare at my closet like “I have nothing to wear,” when really I have plenty. I’m just not feeling anything, or I’m struggling trying to figure out how to dress for the weather (I’m in and out of the office all day so if it’s hot outside I have to dress for that). You’ve probably heard this tip before, and you may or may have not tried it. If you haven’t, DO IT. It saves me so much time because I can just get out of bed, throw my clothes on, and feel happy with my outfit. Plus, we all know that if we look good, we feel good! Bonus points for the day ahead.
2. Pack your purse/bag the night before (saves 5 minutes)
I have a specific work bag that I use because it’s huge and I basically need to have my own mobile office in my bag. So if I use another purse in the evening after work, I’ll remove the necessities from it like my wallet, keys, and lip balm. There have been times, where I forget to put those things back into my work bag (especially the lip balm which is a problem because I think I’m addicted) and that doesn’t make for a very good day. Another thing is sometimes I have specific things that I need to remember to bring the next day, and if they’re not in my purse the night before…let’s just say they won’t make it to the office with me. Make sure everything is in your purse the night before so you can just grab it and go.
3. Be aware of how much gas you have in your car (saves 5-10 minutes)
Say what? Yeah, I’m serious! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been rushing in the morning, made it out the door just in time, got in the car, and realized that I need gas in order to make it to work. Ya’ll know that getting gas can add a significant amount of time to your commute, especially if there’s no gas station super close to you, or if everyone and their mother also decided they needed gas that morning. I know that feeling when you’re on your way home, you realize you need gas for the next day, and you tell yourself “I’ll just get gas in the morning,” but then you totally forget and don’t leave early enough to get the gas (been there, done that…plenty of times). Just make sure you gas up the night before so you’re ready to roll. We don’t need you getting stuck on the freeway somewhere.
4. Prep your lunch the night before (saves 10-15 minutes)
This doesn’t necessarily mean to do the whole meal prep thing where you cook all of your meals for the week on Sunday (you can do this though if that’s your preference!) I usually cook a meal on Saturday or Sunday that I can continue eating till about Wednesday. Then, for Thursday and Friday, I just figure out what I want to bring for lunch the night before. That usually involves making a sandwich, salad, or wrap (something simple) and having extra snacks and fruit ready to go with it. Basically, just have a plan as to what you’re going to have for lunch that day and have it ready to go in the fridge already so you can just throw it in your lunch bag.
5. Ignore the phone! (saves 10-20 minutes)
I think it’s pretty safe to say that the first thing you do when you wake up is check your phone. Please let me know if I’m wrong, but for me, it’s definitely true. Your phone alarm goes off to wake you up, you grab it, turn it off, and more than likely open up social media. We all know how easy it is to get lost scrolling in social media. Pretty soon 10-20 minutes have gone by and you’re still laying in bed. It’s ok girl it happens to me all the time, but we’re putting a stop to this today. Turn the alarm off and keep it pushin’. Try and use something else to wake you up, and keep your phone far away from your bed at night. I set an alarm on my Fitbit, and it vibrates on my wrist to wake me up. This is honestly a much more soothing and calm way to wake up anyway as opposed to having an obnoxious alarm blaring at me. With that said, if you do use your phone alarm, set the ringtone to something more pleasant than the default annoying beeping that just makes you angry when it goes off. Another tip if you do need to use your phone alarm is to keep the phone in a spot that forces you to get out of bed in order to turn it off. Just don’t crawl back into bed with it.
6. Save the full glam routine for the weekends (saves 10-30 minutes)
Have a simple go-to make up look, and hairstyle for your work days. I’m not very good at make up anyways so my routine is always simple. Plus, my face is way too oily to get through a work day with a full face of makeup (I SO wish I didn’t have this problem though). I just wear light foundation, mascara, and blush, and I’m good to go. My hair is another issue, but to keep it simple I’ll usually just put it in a bun. If I don’t, I’ll spend up to 30 unnecessary minutes trying to make it look presentable. My hair is between “not curly enough” and “not straight enough” and it’s basically a ball of frizz when I wake up. A needy ball of frizz that requires immediate attention. If you enjoy putting more effort into your hair and makeup that’s totally fine girl! I wish I was like you #goals. Just make sure you wake up early enough to give yourself enough time to get ready or you’ll end up in the never ending spiral of makeup touch ups like my girl Sepideh from Elle is For Love (she said this two days before I’m publishing this and I couldn’t help but use it because it’s just way too accurate + relatable)
7. COFFEE! (it just makes you happy)
Coffee doesn’t exactly save you time, but it does add some happiness and positivity to your mornings (if you’re obsessed with coffee like I am). It definitely gives me something to look forward to in the morning! You can save time with how you make your coffee though. I’m a french press girl at the moment. So in the morning, I grind my coffee beans, put them in the french press, heat up some water in my Electric Kettle (it’s super fast!) and pour the water into the french press to let it brew for 4 minutes. Then just throw in some heavy whipping cream and I’m good to go. I love trying out different coffee beans (I’m also a dark roast kind of girl) and I’ve recently found this amazing coffee company, Three Avocados, Inc! The best part? They’re a Non-Profit Coffee Company & 100% of their net proceeds provide clean water in Uganda. WHAT? Yes! As a social worker, I’m all about supporting non-profits and social causes so I jumped on the opportunity and purchased the coffee and the mug myself. I mean, coffee, and helping others are two of my favorite things so Three Avocados, Inc was honestly made for my life.
To be totally honest, I was skeptical about how the coffee would taste. If you know me, you know that I’m a total coffee snob and I’m picky about where I get my coffee from. This coffee tastes great though! I bought the Uganda Bugisu Dark Roast Coffee and it totally lived up to my coffee snob standards. Bold, earthy, classic french roast flavor. Definitely makes my mornings better!
8. Have a Positive Attitude (also keeps you happy!)
The truth is, when you’re running late, stressing out over it isn’t going to fix it. Try your best to stay calm and just go with the flow. If you are going to be late, just be responsible and call your boss. It’s way better than getting into an accident on your way to work because you’re speeding or stressing out about being on time. I know, easier said than done. However, that just reinforces my point about saving as much time as you can in the morning, and figuring out exactly when you need to force yourself out of bed to start your day!
Also let’s start embracing mornings, and get rid of that “mornings suck” attitude. It’s all about mindset and reframing all that negativity that we so easily associate with getting up early in the morning. This is honestly a major key to truly having a stress free morning.
Told y’all this wouldn’t be a glamorous morning routine, but I really hope you can take something from it! Us “lazy girls” can conquer this together and get our lives together in the mornings. Let me know what your best morning time savers are! Or things that you do to make it easier to wake up before the sun. I need your help girl!
