Let’s change the meaning of Valentine’s Day this year shall we? Why does this holiday even exist anyway? I don’t know the story behind Valentine’s Day, and I’m not going to turn this blog post into a history lesson (pretty sure it wasn’t always about chocolate and flowers though). Just know that this Valentine’s Day, whether you’re in a relationship or not, you can celebrate! I want to reframe Valentine’s Day into self love day and give you some ideas on how to treat yourself. Of course, everything I mention can be used to treat yourself any day of the year, but since Valentine’s Day is coming up we’ll start there 😉
(I partnered with JORD watches for this post, but all thoughts and opinions are my own. I had seen their watches all over Instagram last year, and was excited to get the chance to work with them myself. Their watches truly are unique and beautifully crafted so they make the perfect gift for yourself, or a special someone in your life. Lucky for you, they have provided me with a link where you can enter to win a $100 gift card to their shop! All entrants will receive a 10% off discount code as well. You can enter the content HERE. Enjoy!)
How to Treat Yourself on Valentine’s Day
1. Bake yourself your favorite treats
I personally love baking, and consider it a form of self care. That’s probably because I also have a major sweet tooth. I don’t bake often because it’s not exactly healthy for me to be eating sweets all the time haha, so whenever a holiday comes around I use it as a reason to bake. Find a fun Valentine’s day themed treat to bake for yourself, and have fun doing it! I made red velvet brownies with cream cheese frosting one year and they were amazing (they were for my boyfriend, but you know I had to have some myself). If you’re not into sweets, or you don’t eat sugar, that’s ok too! Just take some time to bake whatever you consider to be your “favorite treat.” Do it for you, because you love yourself 😉
2. Binge watch a TV series on Netflix with pizza & wine
This may seem lazy or unproductive, but I’m giving you permission to enjoy this. It’s totally fine to engage in some “mindless” activities sometimes (like watching Netflix). You don’t always have to be doing something productive, or something that makes you think. So since we’re talking about treating yourself as an act of self love, a day of Netflix and relaxation is totally okay! Throw a box of your favorite pizza, and a bottle of wine in there and you have yourself a very enjoyable night (by the way, this is totally going to be me, binge watching How to Get Away With Murder!)
3. Have a friend over for dinner and cook your favorite meal
Even though this isn’t something you do alone, I still consider it a treat. It’s always nice to enjoy some time with the people that are closest to us, and sometimes life gets in the way of us doing that as often as we’d like. Maintaining close relationships with others is part of self care after all. So call up your bestie and fix a meal that both of you love. You can even add in the Netflix binge and wine to this equation for the perfect BFF date for Valentine’s Day.
4. Enjoy an at home spa day
This is my fav and it’s so much cheaper than going to an actual spa. You can do a whole variety of things for your special sanctuary spa day; face mask, sugar scrub, hair mask, manicure/pedicure, bubble bath, etc. You can even do some DIYs for most of that stuff to add some extra fun into the day. Make some bath bombs in cute little heart shapes to really get into the Valentine’s Day spirit (I’ve never tried to DIY bath bombs before, but it’s on my to-do list). Turn on some relaxing music, pop some champagne, and have some chocolate to make this the ultimate way to treat yourself.
5. Buy yourself something nice, like a JORD Watch!
Buying yourself something is probably one of the first things you think about when you hear “treat yourself.” We’ve all been at the mall before, seen something we just HAD to have and used the excuse of treating ourselves to buy it (guilty). Well, to be honest, that’s totally ok! (if you don’t go out of control and get into crazy debt haha). Buying gifts for our family and friends is a way to show love, so that same concept applies to buying gifts for ourselves too! When it comes to gift giving, I’m all about finding unique, and personalized gifts. A JORD watch is definitely one of those gifts. Their watches are beautifully crafted out of wood, and they come in a variety of styles and colors to match anyone’s tastes. I got the JORD Fieldcrest Maple, and it’s the perfect compromise between being minimal, and standing out. My favorite part is how light the watch is, being that it’s made out of wood. Heavy metal watches bother me after a while, so I love that I can wear my JORD watch to work all day without getting tired of feeling it on my wrist. I get so many compliments on it too! So if you’re looking for the perfectly unique gift to treat yourself, or someone else, check out JORD men’s and women’s collections. 6. Get a massage
Getting a massage is actually not as lavish and expensive as you might think. Check Groupon for local deals on massages and you will not be disappointed. You can usually find deals between $25-40 and it’s SO worth it. I promise you’ll leave the massage feeling 100 times more relaxed than you did when you got there. I got my first professional massage ever almost two years ago and I was so glad I tried it out! It’s definitely one of those treat yourself experiences you need to try at least once in your life.
7. Explore, go somewhere new by yourself
It’s nice to get out of the house sometimes, and explore new places. If you’re anything like me, you probably hesitate to go to new places alone where you don’t know what to expect. I’ve been learning to push myself out of my comfort zone and just go, because it usually ends up being a positive experience. It could be as simple as going to a new coffee shop, restaurant, park, or library, or it could be something totally different like an art show, a paint & sip (these are super fun!), a dance class, a meditation group, or some other social event. Treat yourself by putting yourself out there and exploring something new. These little spontaneous trips to try new things and see new place, can all be considered self care, and nothing says self love like a little self care.
8. Buy yourself flowers
Because flowers are pretty, duh. No but seriously, flowers can really work to boost your mood. They smell amazing, they add some color to the room, and they serve as a symbol of your self love. Flowers are a great way to add positive vibes to any space, making them a perfect and simple way to treat yourself any day of the year.
9. Take a nap!!
YES, this is a treat in a world where we’re so busy all the time, and people take pride in the fact that they hardly sleep. No, girl that is not okay. Sleep is so important for your health, and for ensuring you’re functioning as your best possible self. Treat yourself by taking a 20-30 minute nap, and you’ll thank yourself when you wake up. You deserve some rest!
10. Celebrate yourself with a party (by yourself!)
Is this weird? I don’t think so. Start the party by journaling a list of things that you love about yourself. Include things that you’re proud of, things you’ve accomplished, things others say they love about you, etc. Get your favorite snacks, grab a bottle of wine (clearly I love wine haha), turn on the music and dance like nobody is watching…because, well, they’re not. This is a party by yourself 😉 Ok but for real on a more serious note, this is a time for self reflection, and appreciation. It’s a good idea to acknowledge your strengths and accomplishments every now and then. Don’t wait for validation from other people, when you can provide that validation and praise to yourself. So treat yourself to some compliments, and that feeling of genuine self love.
11. Enjoy a creative escape
This tip is like a little retreat just for you and your creativity. Basically, do anything that helps to unleash your creative ability, and helps you to stop thinking about anything else. Get lost in the creative vibes and enjoy yourself. Go journal or paint outside at a local park. Go take pictures of your city, or of the beauty you find in nature. Develop the pictures and turn them into works of art. Do that DIY project you’ve been thinking about doing for so long. Learn to crochet or knit. Try an art medium you haven’t used before like pastels, or watercolor. Learn brush lettering. Try an adult coloring book. Make a vision board. Anything that makes you feel inspired, happy, and creative.
I hope you learned some new, and fresh ideas on how to treat yourself this Valentine’s Day! Or that you’re at least feeling inspired to try an idea out that you’ve been considering for a while now. Part of self love is recognizing that you deserve to be treated. You deserve self care, and to be treated with respect (not only by others, but by yourself as well!). So turn Valentine’s Day into self love day this year and treat the heck out of yourself.
